Talk Title: Cerebellar damage causes selective motor, sensory and learning impairments
Abstract
Human motor control and learning rely on multiple brain mechanisms that operate across different timescales and respond to distinct behavioral signals. Here I describe how cerebellar damage affects three key domains of behavior: movement execution, sensory processing, and motor learning. By comparing what remains intact versus what becomes impaired, I highlight the selective nature of cerebellar dysfunction across all three areas. Collectively this work is designed to advance our understanding of cerebellar function and inform better rehabilitation strategies for people with cerebellar damage.
Brief Bio:
Amy Bastian is a neuroscientist and physical therapist who studies human movement. She is CSO of Kennedy Krieger Institute and Professor of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her work focuses on sensorimotor function in people with cerebellar damage and the development of motor control and learning mechanisms through childhood.
