Origami: The Two Cultures of Science and Art Meet
Description
Workshop Introduction:
C.P. Snow famously posited a chasm between the scientific and humanistic cultures, arguing that they were so fundamentally different as to constitute separate civilizations. This intellectual divide has hindered progress in many fields. Today, I propose origami as a bridge across this chasm. Traditionally considered an art form, origami has evolved into a discipline with profound scientific underpinnings. In this workshop, we’ll explore origami as a “third culture,” examining its development, design methodologies, practical applications, and cultural significance. To conclude, we’ll delve into a hands-on demonstration of a foldable newspaper--The Flower in May--designed by Pei.
