    Description

    Workshop Introduction:

C.P. Snow famously posited a chasm between the scientific and humanistic cultures, arguing that they were so fundamentally different as to constitute separate civilizations. This intellectual divide has hindered progress in many fields. Today, I propose origami as a bridge across this chasm. Traditionally considered an art form, origami has evolved into a discipline with profound scientific underpinnings. In this workshop, we’ll explore origami as a “third culture,” examining its development, design methodologies, practical applications, and cultural significance. To conclude, we’ll delve into a hands-on demonstration of a foldable newspaper--The Flower in May--designed by Pei.

    Speaker Bio:

Haozheng Pei is a renowned Chinese sci-artist and designer with a profound dedication to origami. Over two decades, he has mastered intricate folding techniques, creating thought-provoking works that blend artistic expression with humanitarian ideals. His work has garnered international acclaim, with recognition from esteemed organizations such as Guinness World Records (UK), Cittaslow International (Italy), OrigamiUSA (USA), Olympic Council of Asia, Boao Forum For Asia (China), among others. A dedicated researcher, Pei explores the convergence of art and science within origami, culminating in achievements like being the first Chinese special guest at the OrigamiUSA annual convention and the first Chinese artist to publish in the International Meeting on Origami in Science, Mathematics and Education. His innovative spirit extends to other creative realms, including television production, as evidenced by his work on multiple episodes of the popular show, Super Brain.
