Open Science: Challenges, Opportunities, and Assumptions
Description
Chris Bourg is the Director of Libraries at MIT. Chris started her academic career as a Sociologist, but turned to a career in research libraries out of a desire to work on advancing more open and more equitable systems for knowledge sharing and production. In this talk, she will address the challenges and opportunities in the Open Science movement. She will discuss various interventions, at MIT and elsewhere, intended to promote Open Science, and highlight the often implicit theories and assumptions behind them. She will, of course, specifically address the recent University of California deal with Elsevier, and how it compares to the MIT approach. Finally, she will talk about the need for more research about research (science of science), to provide a robust evidence base to guide Open Science policies and practices.
