Description
Imitation or mirroring between partners in a social interaction often plays a positive role by both reflecting and eliciting positive attitudes. One explanation for this prosocial function appeals to homophily, arguing that people like those who mirror them because it enhances a sense of similarity. I will present an alternative account, which posits that imitation can serve as a signal of helpful or cooperative capacity and motivation. I will provide evidence for this alternative account through experiments showing that, and when, people form positive evaluations of those they witness imitating others.
