Title: Norms for repeated generous actions in social relationships

Abstract: People frequently engage in generous or prosocial interactions that are effortful and rewarding for both people but where this effort/reward is uneven between them. What norms do people have for how they manage this unevenness over time? Over 4 studies (N = 1045), we find that people expect generous interactions to repeat when two people are in a social relationship, and that they use the presence and direction of relationship asymmetry to form shared expectations and norms for repeated generous interactions.
