How to Declare a Minor Program In Science, Engineering, or Architecture

The Minor Application should be filled out by the end of your sophomore year, but no later than Add Date one full term before the term in which you expect to receive the S.B. degree.

You must consult the Minor Advisor in your field of interest to apply for a Minor and to make certain that you are fulfilling the specific requirements.

For more information on the Minor in BCS, see the minor administrator: Prof. Alan Hein, NE20-350, 3-5759, hein@mit.edu

Procedures for Applying for and Completing a Minor Program:

  1. Pick up a MINOR APPLICATION from the Undergraduate Office of your field of interest or from the Student Services Center (11-120)
  2. Meet with the Minor Advisor in your chosen field to plan your program of study and complete the Application. Bring a copy of your most recent grade report to the meeting.
  3. Distribute the canary copy of the signed application to the School Office of the Minor and the pink copy to your Faculty Advisor.
  4. To change any part of your approved program, you must consult again with the Minor Advisor before on the changes.
  5. When you have completed all approved subjects within your Minor Program, bring a copy of your most recent grade report (or an equivalent statement from your Faculty Advisor) as well as a Minor Completion Form to the Minor Advisor, who will certify completion of your program by signing the form.

You must file the MINOR Completion Form by the end of the third week of the term in which you plan to receive the S.B. degree—even if you are taking subjects in your final term to complete the minor. There will be a $40 late fee—but most importantly, you risk not being awarded the minor if the form is submitted late.

If you are taking one or more subjects in your final term to complete the Minor, the Registrar will record that the Minor is completed in full when passing grades in these subjects have been reported.
  6. 6. Distribute the canary copy of the signed MINOR Completion Form to the School Office of the Minor and the pink copy to your Faculty Advisor.

NOTE: If you decide not to earn a Minor after applying for one, it is essential that you promptly notify the Minor Advisor.
